Martyrs’ Lane is a cemetery and national memorial in Baku, Azerbaijan, dedicated to those killed in political violence and conflicts including Black January and the Nagorno-Karabakh war. The site is a prominent place of remembrance in the city.
A formal cemetery with individual graves, memorial plaques and an eternal flame, set on a hillside overlooking Baku and the Caspian Sea. The arrangement of tombs and monuments creates a compact memorial precinct used for commemorations and visits by families and officials.
The cemetery developed in the late 20th century following Black January in 1990 and was used subsequently for burials of those killed in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict and other national tragedies. It has since been maintained as a national site of remembrance.
Perched on a hill to the south of central Baku, the site overlooks the city and the Caspian Sea and is within easy reach of central Baku landmarks.

How to Get to Martyrs' Lane #
Martyrs’ Lane (Şəhidlər Xiyabanı) sits on the hill above central Baku and is reached from the city centre. From Baku Boulevard you can take the Baku Funicular up toward Upland Park and then walk a few minutes to the memorial; the nearest Baku Metro stations are Icherisheher (Inner City) and Sahil, from which a short taxi ride or a 10-20 minute walk will bring you to the funicular or the lower approach to the lane.
Tips for Visiting Martyrs' Lane #
- Visit early morning or at sunset to combine the memorial's solemn atmosphere with excellent panoramic views of Baku bay and the Flame Towers-both times are quieter than mid-day.
- Approach from the promenade near the Flame Towers or the Boulevard and use the formal pathways up the hill to avoid steep or unmarked climbs; the site is deliberately designed for processional access.
- Allow a respectful pace-this is a cemetery and national memorial. Many visitors miss the smaller memorial plaques and inscriptions nearby, so take time to read the markers rather than just viewing the main monument.
