Martha’s Vineyard is an island off the southern coast of Cape Cod in Massachusetts, United States, known as a popular summer holiday destination. The island combines small towns, beaches and cultural attractions that draw seasonal visitors.

Key attractions are the historic whaling port of Edgartown, the colorful Victorian cottages and temporary entertainment in Oak Bluffs, and the clay cliffs and lighthouse at Aquinnah. Ferries link the island to mainland ports and the island offers beaches, bike routes, small museums and summer events; services are concentrated in the main towns.

The island has a long history of Wampanoag habitation and later development as whaling ports and summer resorts from the 19th century onward. Seasonal tourism has shaped the island’s economy and infrastructure over the past century.

Martha’s Vineyard lies south of Cape Cod and is accessed by ferry from several mainland ports; ferry terminals and small regional airports provide links to the mainland.

  • Ferry access: Ferries operate from several mainland ports including Woods Hole and New Bedford; vehicle space on peak-season ferries is limited and reservations are recommended.
  • Seasonality: Population and services increase dramatically in summer; expect busy roads, booked accommodations and seasonal businesses mainly active from late spring to early fall.

What to See #

  • Edgartown: Edgartown - a historic whaling-era port with preserved 18th- and 19th-century architecture and a working harbour.
  • Oak Bluffs: Oak Bluffs - known for its Victorian-era 'gingerbread' cottages, a colorful harbor and seasonal entertainment venues.
  • Vineyard Haven: Vineyard Haven (Tisbury) - a main ferry port and service centre with shops and transport links to the mainland.
  • Other towns: Chilmark, West Tisbury and Aquinnah - rural and coastal areas known for beaches, cliffs and low-density development.

How to Get to Martha's Vineyard #

Martha’s Vineyard is reached primarily by ferry: the Steamship Authority runs year-round ferries from Woods Hole (Falmouth, MA) to Oak Bluffs and Vineyard Haven; seasonal ferries also run from New Bedford and Hyannis. Woods Hole is accessible by car or bus from the Boston area (roughly 75 miles / about 120 km drive from Boston); ferry terminals on the island are a short walk from town centers and taxi/shuttle services are available.

Tips for Visiting Martha's Vineyard #

  • If you need to bring a car, reserve a Steamship Authority vehicle ferry slot well in advance during summer weekends; foot-passenger ferries (to Oak Bluffs, Vineyard Haven, Edgartown) can fill quickly on holiday weekends so book early or take an early-morning sailing to avoid queues.
  • To avoid the biggest crowds on summer afternoons, explore quieter towns like Chilmark and West Tisbury or ride to the Menemsha/Aquinnah areas; plan to see the Aquinnah Cliffs at sunset for best light but expect a small parking fee at the overlook.
  • Use the island's bike paths and short ferries between towns in the morning-many visitors never leave the three main harbors, while inland lanes and conservation lands (Mytoi, Polly Hill Arboretum) stay peaceful until midday.
