Marksburg
Castle Well-preserved medieval castle overlooking the Rhine Valley
Perched above the Rhine at Braubach, Marksburg is a largely intact medieval castle open for guided tours-stone keeps, battlements and period rooms illustrate fortress life on an important river route.
Marksburg is a medieval hilltop castle above the town of Braubach on the Rhine in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. It is first documented in 1231 and is notable for being one of the few Rhine castles that was never destroyed and remains largely intact.
On-site interpretation and guided tours concentrate on the castle’s defensive architecture and domestic rooms. The complex includes a bergfried (keep), a palas or great hall, gatehouse and extensive curtain walls; visitors routinely walk battlements and courtyard areas and see preserved medieval timberwork and fireplaces. The castle also offers panoramic views over the Upper Middle Rhine Valley UNESCO World Heritage landscape.
Marksburg was constructed in the medieval period and extended over the Middle Ages for military defence and as a noble residence. It changed ownership through regional noble families and was purchased by the German Castles Association in 1900, which restored parts of the complex and established museum displays.
The castle sits on a steep rocky ridge above the town of Braubach on the right bank of the Rhine, within the Upper Middle Rhine Valley. Braubach lies on the Rhine between Koblenz and Boppard; Marksburg crowns the hillside immediately above the town.
