Markham is a suburban city in York Region, Ontario, within the Greater Toronto Area. It sits roughly 30 kilometres northeast of downtown Toronto and is a regional centre for business, retail and cultural sites.
The city includes a historic village core at Unionville with a pedestrian-oriented Main Street of 19th- and early 20th-century buildings, shops and restaurants that attract visitors for festivals and photography. Markham also hosts large retail destinations and multicultural shopping centres that serve both local residents and regional visitors.
Originally settled as a rural township in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, the area evolved through agriculture into a suburban and industrial centre in the 20th century. Over time several villages and towns were amalgamated into the modern city structure and it now functions as a major suburban municipality within the Toronto region.
Situated on the northern shore of Lake Ontario within York Region, Markham transitions from suburban neighbourhoods in the south to former farmland and greenbelt areas to the north. It lies immediately east of Richmond Hill and north of the City of Toronto.
