How to Get to Markala
Markala is a riverside town near Ségou best reached by road from Bamako. There are no reliable passenger rail services to Markala, so overland travel by bus, shared taxi or private car from Bamako and Ségou is typical.
Bamako-Sénou International Airport (BKO): Bamako is Mali’s main international airport and the gateway for Markala. From Bamako you travel overland to Markala by road (drive times typically 3-5 hours depending on route and stops). Shared taxis or private transfer are the most practical options for this leg.
Regional airfields: There are limited regional flights in Mali; most travellers arrive at Bamako and continue by road to Ségou/Markala rather than rely on multiple short regional flights.
Train: Mali’s long-distance passenger rail network is extremely limited and not a dependable option for reaching Markala.
Bus / Bush taxi: Road minibuses, bush taxis and scheduled buses connect Bamako, Ségou and Markala. The Ségou → Markala leg is short (under 1 hour) and commonly served by shared taxis or local buses; fares are inexpensive and depend on vehicle type and distance.
