The property contains restored public rooms and period interiors that illustrate daily life and the creative workspace of Twain. Guided tours typically cover the family parlors, the author’s study, and exhibits about his writings, with interpretive material about his life and career.

Commissioned by Samuel and Olivia Clemens and designed by Edward T. Potter, the house was completed in 1874. Clemens lived there from 1874 until 1891, after which the house passed through private hands and later underwent extensive preservation and restoration to become a museum.
