Mariupol Travel Guide
City Ukrainian city on the Sea of Azov coast
A port on the Sea of Azov, Mariupol combines sandy spits, steelworks on the skyline and waterfront promenades; visitors found maritime markets, beaches and museums documenting the city’s industrial past.
Why Visit Mariupol? #
Positioned on the Sea of Azov, Mariupol’s appeal has long come from its maritime heritage, coastal promenade and role as a working port with strong local craft and fishing traditions. Museums and memorial sites document industrial and maritime history, and the city’s Greek and Ukrainian cultural influences appear in regional cuisine and festivals. Travelers interested in port-city history, seaside views and regional foodways will find a place shaped by maritime commerce and layered historical narratives.
Who's Mariupol For?
Before 2022 Mariupol was known for Azov Sea beaches, coastal promenades, and parks. Currently the city has suffered major damage and visiting is unsafe; recreational infrastructure may be ruined. Travel is not advised until security and services are restored.
Historically Mariupol had lively fish markets and Azov seafood specialties. Today culinary options are extremely limited due to extensive infrastructure damage; eateries and markets cannot be relied upon. Follow official travel advisories and avoid non-essential travel.
Prior to the conflict Mariupol offered family beaches and parks for children. Much public space and many services have been disrupted and visiting is unsafe; families should not plan trips until security and basic amenities return to the area.
Coastal activities like boating and beach access existed before the war, but current security and infrastructure damage make adventure travel impossible. Any outdoor excursions in the region carry serious risk; consult authoritative advisories and avoid travel.

How to Get to Mariupol
Mariupol historically had Mariupol International Airport and a central railway station (Mariupol-Pasazhyrskyi), but since 2022 most civilian transport links have been suspended. The city is under military/occupation control and regular air, rail and bus services are not operating; travel there is restricted and unsafe. If you need region-level access, use functioning hubs such as Zaporizhzhia International Airport (OZH) or Dnipro-Holovnyi station and follow government guidance.
Mariupol International Airport (closed): Mariupol’s airport and runways suffered heavy damage in 2022 and there are no regular civilian flights into the city. The airport is effectively closed to commercial traffic-do not plan air arrival here.
Zaporizhzhia International Airport (OZH): Zaporizhzhia is the nearest functioning Ukrainian international airport routinely handling commercial flights. There are no regular, safe, or reliable civilian transfer options from Zaporizhzhia into Mariupol at present; overland access into the city is suspended and controlled, and travel is strongly restricted. Check official government travel advisories before making any plans.
Train: Mariupol has a historic Mariupol railway station (Mariupol-Pasazhyrskyi), but regular passenger rail services to Mariupol have been suspended since the large-scale fighting in 2022. Ukrainian long-distance trains instead serve nearby major hubs such as Zaporizhzhia-1 and Dnipro-Holovnyi; from those stations there are currently no reliable civilian rail connections into Mariupol.
Bus: Intercity and regional coach services that previously called at Mariupol have been widely suspended. Road access into and within Mariupol is subject to military control and checkpoints; routine intercity bus links are not functioning. Anyone considering travel should consult up-to-date official notices and avoid attempting independent road travel into the city.
How to Get Around Mariupol
Normal urban transport options in Mariupol (trams, buses, trains and airport services) are not functioning for civilian travellers due to ongoing military control and infrastructure damage. For most travellers the practical approach is to avoid planning to enter the city, instead using functioning hubs such as Zaporizhzhia or Dnipro and following official travel advisories. If you have a specific operational reason to be in the area, coordinate closely with relevant authorities and stay informed about security and transit restrictions.
- Train - Regular passenger train services to Mariupol have been suspended. Nearby functioning Ukrainian rail hubs include Zaporizhzhia-1 and Dnipro-Holovnyi, but onward rail or reliable surface connections into Mariupol are not available. For up-to-date routing check national rail operator notices before travelling.
- Bus / Coach - Intercity coach companies suspended scheduled services into Mariupol after 2022; any bus movement into the city is subject to military/occupation checkpoints and not for civilian travel. Local and regional bus infrastructure in and around Mariupol is not operating normally-do not rely on buses for arrival or onward travel.
- Taxi / Private car - Local taxi or private car travel into Mariupol is strongly inadvisable due to checkpoints, restricted access and security risks. Where movement is permitted, fares and availability will vary and services may be run by non-standard operators; expect unpredictable charges and long delays. Always consult official authorities and avoid independent road travel into the area.
- Airport transfers - There are no safe, routine airport transfer services into Mariupol. If you must travel to the broader region, use a functioning airport (for example Zaporizhzhia International Airport) and arrange transfers only to destinations that are confirmed as accessible and safe. Check with official sources and airlines for the latest guidance before booking.
- Car hire / Driving - Driving into Mariupol is not recommended. Road access is controlled and conditions can be hazardous; vehicle hire companies may refuse cross-region trips or be unable to insure journeys into the area. If you need to travel in southeastern Ukraine, plan routes between secure, government-controlled cities and avoid attempting to enter Mariupol.
- Walking - Walking within the city is not something to plan for as a visitor: movement is restricted, infrastructure damaged and safety cannot be guaranteed. Do not assume normal pedestrian access or services are available; follow official instructions if you are in or near the area.
