Maritime Museum
Museum Museum exhibiting Sweden's maritime history and naval artifacts
Stockholm’s Maritime Museum presents Swedish naval history with ship models, maritime exhibits and temporary displays. Visitors include families, naval enthusiasts and those touring Djurgården’s museum quarter.
The Swedish National Maritime Museum (Sjöhistoriska museet) is located on Djurgården in Stockholm and presents Sweden’s maritime history. The museum opened in 1938 to house national maritime collections.
Exhibitions cover ship models, naval art, maritime archaeology and civilian seafaring, with rotating temporary displays and hands-on or multimedia elements aimed at explaining maritime technology and trade. The museum has gallery space for objects ranging from small models to larger maritime artifacts and displays that trace Sweden’s seafaring links.
The institution was established in the 20th century as a national museum for maritime heritage and has developed its collections and exhibition programme since then. The building and displays have been adapted over time to provide contemporary exhibition spaces.
The museum sits on Djurgården island on the bay of Djurgårdsbrunnsviken, reachable by bus, tram, or short ferry from central Stockholm and close to other Djurgården museums and attractions.
