The Marin Headlands are a coastal headland area immediately north of the Golden Gate Bridge in Marin County, California, forming the southernmost part of the county. The area is part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area and combines coastal cliffs, grasslands and remnant military fortifications.

Key attractions include dramatic viewpoints of the Golden Gate Bridge and San Francisco, historic coastal batteries and fortifications, a working lighthouse, and several beaches and trails. The landscape supports coastal wildlife, migratory raptors and intertidal marine habitats; trails range from short overlooks to multi-kilometre coastal hikes.

Military installations from the late 19th and early 20th centuries were established here for harbor defense and later decommissioned; several batteries and observation posts remain as historic sites. Conservation and public recreation are the main contemporary uses.

Geographically the Headlands rise directly north of the Golden Gate strait across from San Francisco and form the southern tip of Marin County, with road access from the Golden Gate Bridge approach and nearby Sausalito.

  • Photography tip: Best light for Golden Gate Bridge photos is in the late afternoon to sunset from Battery Spencer and Hawk Hill, with fog creating variable conditions in summer.
  • Management and access: Part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, with extensive hiking trails and historic military sites managed by the National Park Service.

What to See #

  • Point Bonita Lighthouse: Point Bonita Lighthouse - situated on a small rock at the western tip, accessed by a footbridge and offering maritime views of the Golden Gate entrance.
  • Battery Spencer: Battery Spencer - early 20th-century coastal artillery battery that provides one of the closest and most photographed viewpoints of the Golden Gate Bridge.
  • Rodeo Beach: Rodeo Beach - a pebble and sand beach on the Pacific side popular for beachcombing and observing surf and marine life.
  • Hawk Hill: Hawk Hill - a low summit with panoramic views of the Golden Gate, San Francisco skyline and seasonal raptor migration viewing.
