Marie-Galante

Marie-Galante is an island in the Guadeloupe archipelago and an overseas department/region of France, known for its agricultural landscape, beaches and rum production. The island has a low-density population and a rural economy centred on sugarcane and distilling.

Visitors come for sandy beaches, quiet coastal villages, and tours of historic and modern rum distilleries. The island’s road network makes it easy to visit windmills, small museums and shoreline viewpoints; the three main population centres provide basic visitor services and ferry connections to the Guadeloupe mainland.

Colonial agricultural development in the 17th and 18th centuries established sugarcane and rum production as the island’s economic backbone. Marie-Galante remains largely rural with continuity of agricultural practices and surviving colonial-era mills and distilleries.

Marie-Galante lies in the Caribbean as part of Guadeloupe, southeast of Grande-Terre, and is accessible by ferry from the main Guadeloupe islands with principal settlements including Grand-Bourg, Capesterre-de-Marie-Galante and Saint-Louis.
