Monument Ancient Bronze Age city ruins on the Euphrates
On the middle Euphrates in Deir ez-Zor Governorate, Mari preserves Bronze Age ruins-palaces, wall paintings and large cuneiform archives excavated since the 1930s. Archaeology-minded visitors study exposed ruins and museum collections.
Mari is an ancient Bronze Age city-state located at Tell Hariri on the Euphrates in eastern Syria, notable for its large palace complex and extensive cuneiform archives. The site provides key evidence for political and economic life in Mesopotamia during the early 2nd millennium BCE.
Ruins include the remains of a large royal palace with decorated rooms and administrative spaces, city fortifications and temple foundations; excavations revealed thousands of clay tablets that record treaties, correspondence and administrative records. The preserved architectural layouts and painted wall fragments give insight into palace planning and ritual practice.
Mari flourished from the early 3rd millennium BCE and reached a political peak under rulers such as Zimri-Lim in the 18th century BCE; the city was destroyed in the 18th century BCE during conflicts with emerging Mesopotamian powers. Modern excavations begun in the 1930s by André Parrot uncovered the palace and archives that established Mari’s importance in ancient Near Eastern history.
The archaeological site sits on the left bank of the Euphrates at Tell Hariri in Syria’s Deir ez-Zor Governorate, near the modern Syria-Iraq border and amid the riverine plains of the Middle Euphrates.
