Margat
Ruins Crusader castle fortress on Syrian coastal hills
Margat (Qal’at al-Marqab) is a Crusader-era fortress in western Syria known for thick stone walls and stepped concentric defenses overlooking olive terraces toward the Mediterranean. Historically built by the Hospitallers, it draws visitors interested in medieval military architecture.
Margat is a large Crusader-era fortress complex located in Syria’s coastal region, historically associated with the Knights Hospitaller. The castle sits on a prominent limestone hill and was a major fortified stronghold during the medieval period.
The built complex comprises massive curtain walls, towers, cisterns and internal halls typical of crusader military architecture; it served as a regional base for order administration and defence. Control of the fortress passed among regional powers during the medieval centuries as Crusader states and Muslim rulers contested coastal strongpoints.
Today the castle remains an archaeological and historical landmark overlooking agricultural plains and the Mediterranean coastal corridor. It is situated in Tartus Governorate in western Syria, on a raised site that commands views over surrounding lowlands.
- Names and orders: Also known by the Arabic name Qal'at al-Marqab, the site is one of the larger Crusader-era fortresses on the Levantine coast and was held by the Knights Hospitaller.

Tips for Visiting Margat #
- Visit early in the day to see the fortress' stone work and ramparts in good light and before any visitor groups arrive; the layered Crusader, Islamic and later modifications are best appreciated with time and quiet.
- Approach via the main coastal road from Tartus/Baniyas where local directions and guides are usually based; confirm current access with local authorities because conditions and permissions can change.
- If security or access permits, allow time to inspect interior spaces (cisterns and vaulted rooms) and the defensive layout-many visitors focus only on the exterior curtain walls and miss the internal engineering and views over the coastal plain.
Best Time to Visit Margat #
Visit Margat in spring or autumn for mild conditions and comfortable sightseeing around the fortress.
