Marble Arch Caves
Arch Limestone show caves and underground rivers in karst landscape
The Marble Arch Caves in Northern Ireland offer guided boat and foot tours through limestone caverns and active river passages; the site includes a visitor centre inside the Fermanagh UNESCO Global Geopark.
The Marble Arch Caves are a karst showcave system in County Fermanagh, Northern Ireland, and form the core of the Marble Arch Caves Global Geopark. The site combines developed underground passages with surface karst landscape and visitor facilities.
Guided tours lead visitors through limestone passages and include a boat trip along sections of the subterranean Cladagh River, showcasing stalactites, flowstone and other karst formations. A visitor centre provides displays on local geology, cave formation and the geopark’s surface features.
The caves are the product of long-term karst erosion in limestone around the Cuilcagh area and have been explored and mapped progressively through the 20th century. The showcave and associated visitor infrastructure were developed to allow controlled public access and interpretation of the karst landscape.
The caves and visitor centre lie near the village of Florencecourt at the foot of the Cuilcagh Mountains in western County Fermanagh, close to the border with County Cavan.
- Underground boat trip: Guided tours include an underground boat element on the Cladagh River and a walking route through decorated limestone passages.
- Geopark status: Part of the broader Marble Arch Caves Global Geopark, linking surface karst features with the subterranean cave network.
What to See #
- Showcave and Visitor Centre: The guided showcave route combines a walking circuit with an underground boat trip on sections of the subterranean Cladagh River and is run from the site's visitor centre.
- Cladagh River passages: Extensive submerged passages of the Cladagh River cut through the limestone; these river caves form the main underground attraction on guided tours.
