Monument Triumphal arch and busy London road junction

Marble Arch is a 19th-century white Carrara marble arch in central London used historically as a ceremonial gateway and now standing on a traffic island near Hyde Park. The arch was designed as a ceremonial entrance and later relocated to its present site.
Walkers and motorists encounter the arch as a prominent urban landmark at the edge of Hyde Park, close to shopping on Oxford Street and to the park’s open spaces. It is frequently photographed from the park side and forms part of local walking routes that include Speakers’ Corner and nearby green space.
Originally designed in the early 19th century as a royal ceremonial entrance, the arch was moved from its original site near Buckingham Palace to its current location in the mid-19th century. Its distinctive white marble facing and classical design reflect its original ceremonial role.
