The Mapungubwe Cultural Landscape is a UNESCO World Heritage site in northern South Africa that preserves the remains of a precolonial state at the confluence of the Limpopo and Shashe rivers. The landscape contains fortified hilltops, settlement remains and burial mounds dating to the later first and early second millennia CE.

The principal focus is Mapungubwe Hill, which served as a royal centre and burial site and is surrounded by satellite settlements such as K2 that document craft production and domestic life. Excavations have revealed evidence of social stratification, long-distance trade and specialized production.

The cultural complex flourished roughly between the 11th and 13th centuries CE and represents an important phase in southern African political and economic development prior to later states in the region. The landscape is protected within a national park and is located near South Africa’s borders with Botswana and Zimbabwe.

  • Period of significance: The Mapungubwe state flourished in the late first and early second millennia CE, approximately between the 11th and 13th centuries, and is one of southern Africa's earliest complex societies.
  • Notable find: Archaeological excavations recovered high-status grave goods, including a finely crafted small gold rhinoceros, which illustrate the site's regional wealth and trade connections.

What to See #

  • Mapungubwe Hill: Mapungubwe Hill is the main archaeological mound and former royal centre, with terraced areas and burial features datable to the late first millennium AD.
  • K2 and satellite sites: K2 and surrounding habitation sites form satellite settlements and excavated areas that show craft production and domestic occupation within the cultural landscape.
