Maoke Mountains
Mountains High tropical mountain range including Indonesia's glacier peaks
The Maoke Mountains run across central New Guinea and include Papua’s high peaks; they draw mountaineers and trekkers, indigenous highland communities and scientific interest in alpine glaciers and biodiversity.
The Maoke Mountains are a major mountain range in central Papua on the island of New Guinea, notable for very high tropical peaks and formerly extensive equatorial glaciers. The range includes the highest mountain of Oceania, Puncak Jaya (4,884 meters).
Climbers and mountaineers come for technical ascents of Puncak Jaya and high-altitude alpine routes; the peak is one of the world’s Seven Summits by the Australasian definition. Trekking in lower parts of the range visits alpine grasslands, montane rainforest and traditional highland communities, but high-elevation access is logistically complex and limited.
Natural features include steep ridges, deep valleys and remnants of tropical glaciers that have been retreating rapidly over recent decades. Biological diversity is high, with distinct montane ecosystems at different elevations.
Geologically the range is part of the central spine of New Guinea formed by tectonic uplift; human settlement of the highlands dates back thousands of years with numerous indigenous highland groups. Modern interest increased with 20th-century exploration and climbing expeditions to the range’s highest summits.
The Maoke Mountains run through the interior of the island of New Guinea within Indonesian Papua (now administered as Highland Papua and surrounding provinces), forming a central highland spine across the island.
- Highest peak: Contains Puncak Jaya at 4,884 meters, the highest point on the island of New Guinea and in the Australasian region.
- Access and glaciers: Access to high peaks normally requires organized expeditions and permits due to remoteness and rugged terrain; glaciers that once capped several peaks have retreated markedly in recent decades.
What to See #
- Puncak Jaya: Puncak Jaya (Carstensz Pyramid) - the highest peak in the range and in Oceania, rising to 4,884 meters and the primary objective for mountaineers visiting the range.
- Sudirman Range: Sudirman Range - the western section of the Maoke Mountains that contains the highest peaks and the main glaciers historically recorded in central New Guinea.
How to Get to Maoke Mountains #
Access via regional air services to Timika or Wamena depending on the route. From coastal cities, charter flights bring climbers and trekkers to staging towns; organized expeditions arrange permits and local guides.
