The Mantiqueira Mountains are a mountain chain in southeastern Brazil stretching across parts of Minas Gerais, São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro states. The range contains some of Brazil’s highest peaks, areas of montane forest and important water catchments.

Visitors come for hiking, mountain scenery and cooler highland towns that serve as bases for outdoor activities; towns such as Campos do Jordão and Monte Verde are well known mountain resorts. The range contains national-park protected sectors that provide marked trails and established viewpoints.

Geologically the range is an uplifted block with deeply incised valleys, and its higher parts support cloud forest and distinct montane flora compared with surrounding lowlands. The highest summits are among the tallest in southeast Brazil and are focal points for trekkers.

The Mantiqueira Mountains lie inland from Brazil’s southeastern coastal plain and are within driving distance of major cities such as São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, forming an important regional highland system.

  • Extent and climate: The range spans parts of Minas Gerais, São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro states and includes Brazil's higher peaks, with alpine climates and cloud forest at altitude.
