About Manoel Theatre

The Manoel Theatre (Teatru Manoel) is a baroque theatre located in Valletta, Malta, and is one of Europe’s oldest working theatres. It was commissioned by Grand Master António Manoel de Vilhena in the early 18th century and has retained its role as a venue for drama, opera and concerts.

The theatre features period architecture and interior decoration typical of its era and has undergone restorations to preserve its historic fabric while remaining an active performance space. It is used for a program of plays, concerts and cultural events throughout the year.

The theatre was built in the early 1730s under the patronage of the Order of St. John and has been part of Valletta’s cultural scene since that time.

The Manoel Theatre stands in the center of Valletta, Malta’s capital city, close to the main streets and historic fabric of the fortified city.

How to Get to Manoel Theatre

Teatru Manoel sits in central Valletta a short walk from the city’s main transit hubs. Buses from across Malta operated by Malta Public Transport terminate at the Valletta Bus Terminus (Triton Fountain); from there it’s roughly a 5-10 minute walk (about 400-700 m) along Republic Street/Old Theatre Street to the theatre. Alternatively the Sliema-Valletta ferry lands at the Valletta Ferry Terminal - a 5-8 minute walk to Manoel Theatre.

If driving from Malta International Airport it’s approximately 7-9 km to Valletta (about 15-25 minutes in normal traffic); note that vehicle access and parking in Valletta are restricted, so most visitors use buses, the ferry or park outside the city and walk in.
