Manicouagan Reservoir
Lake Circular reservoir in Quebec formed by meteor impact.
A circular reservoir in Quebec formed by a meteorite impact, Manicouagan surrounds René-Levasseur Island; visitors see the crater by scenic flights, study its geology and photograph the distinctive annular lake from lookout points.
The Manicouagan Reservoir is a large, ring-shaped lake in central Quebec created when the Manicouagan River was impounded to produce a hydroelectric reservoir. The distinctive annular lake occupies the basin of an ancient impact structure and includes a large central island.
Visitors and observers note the reservoir’s conspicuous circular form and the wooded central island, which together form one of Quebec’s most recognisable landscape features. The area has limited tourism infrastructure but attracts photographers, geologists and some boaters.
The basin is the site of mid-20th-century hydroelectric development when dams and water-control structures were constructed to provide electricity; those works transformed the original river system into the present reservoir.
Geographically the reservoir lies in central Quebec and is reached from regional highways and service towns; it is set in a boreal forest landscape with lakes, rivers and mixed woodland surrounding the impounded basin.
- Impact structure visibility: The reservoir fills a distinct ring-shaped basin formed by an ancient meteorite impact and is highly visible from satellite imagery.
What to See #
- René-Levasseur Island: René-Levasseur Island occupies the central uplift of the structure and forms a large island within the reservoir, noted for its steep ring-shaped coastline.
- Hydroelectric works and access roads: Hydroelectric infrastructure and associated roads around the reservoir rim that regulate water levels and supply downstream generating stations.
How to Get to Manicouagan Reservoir #
There is no regular road access to the reservoir’s central island. The usual route is to fly to Sept-Îles (YZV) or Baie-Comeau (YBC) and charter a floatplane or helicopter to René-Levasseur Island or to lakeside access points. Seasonal bush roads and logging tracks approach the circumference but require local permission and 4x4 vehicles.
Tips for Visiting Manicouagan Reservoir #
- Fly into Baie-Comeau (YBC) or Sept-Îles (YZV) and arrange bush plane or floatplane charter for the reservoir - scheduled transport does not service the lake itself.
- If visiting by air, request photos of the circular island (Île René-Levasseur) and try to time the flight for late afternoon; the crater ring throws long shadows that give scale.
- Carry insect repellent and layers - weather changes fast on the central Quebec plateau; beaches and exposed rock warm quickly in sun but wind off the water is sharp.
- Respect private logging roads and Indigenous land: much of the region is remote and access often requires permission or local guide accompaniment.
Best Time to Visit Manicouagan Reservoir #
Best visited June-October when weather allows safe access; flights and guides operate mainly in summer.
