Mangup, often referred to as Mangup-Kale, is a medieval fortress and cave settlement set on a limestone plateau in the Crimean Mountains. It is notable for extensive ruined fortifications, carved dwellings and ecclesiastical remains from medieval times.

The plateau hosts remains of defensive walls, domestic foundations and church buildings arranged across terraces and natural ledges, offering a compact example of a fortified medieval town. Visitors follow mountain trails to reach the summit plateau and ruins.

Mangup developed as a fortified settlement during the Byzantine period and later became the capital of the Principality of Theodoro in the late Middle Ages; it remained inhabited until the Ottoman conquest in the 15th century. The site shows layers of occupation from Byzantine through medieval Greek and local rulers.

The fortress sits in the southwestern Crimean Mountains within the area administered from Sevastopol, on a prominent limestone outcrop above surrounding valleys and accessible by local mountain roads and footpaths.

  • Plateau fortress: The site occupies a defensive limestone plateau with steep cliffs, making the ruins visible from surrounding valleys and requiring a mountain approach for visitors.
