Manger Square

Manger Square is the main public square in the centre of Bethlehem, West Bank, directly in front of the city’s principal basilica. It functions as the civic and religious heart of Bethlehem and a focal point for pilgrim activity.

The square opens onto the main entrance of the basilica and is lined with hotels, shops and administrative buildings that serve visitors and pilgrims. It regularly accommodates large crowds for religious observances, political rallies and cultural events, with thousands attending major festivals such as Christmas.

The square developed around the site of the Church of the Nativity, a church with origins in the early 4th century, and has long been the town’s primary gathering place for ceremonies and processions. Its configuration has evolved with modern urban development but its role as Bethlehem’s civic centre remains unchanged.

Located in central Bethlehem, the square sits immediately outside the basilica in the Old City area, roughly 10 kilometres south of Jerusalem. The surrounding streets are dense with shops, hotels and pilgrimage-related services.

• Christmas celebrations: Annual Christmas Eve events and midnight Mass draw thousands of pilgrims and tourists to the square, making December the busiest time to visit.
