Mangareva

Mangareva is the largest island of the Gambier Islands in French Polynesia, forming the cultural and administrative centre of the group. It is noted for its sheltered lagoon and the main village of Rikitea.

The island’s reef-fringed lagoon and surrounding motus offer snorkeling, small-boat anchorage and shore-side pearl farms within a few kilometres of the village. The central settlement area contains churches, local markets and coastal trails suitable for short walks.

Mangareva has been inhabited by Polynesian communities for many centuries and became a regional centre in the Gambier group. In the 19th century French Catholic missionaries and later colonial administration altered settlement patterns and local architecture; the island is now part of the overseas collectivity of French Polynesia.

Located in the Gambier archipelago in the southeast of French Polynesia, Mangareva sits in a remote part of the South Pacific; the atoll group is several hundred to over a thousand kilometres southeast of Tahiti, with air links via Rikitea to Papeete and other islands.

• Access: Served by short domestic flights from Tahiti and other Gambier islands, with limited weekly schedules - plan transfers well in advance.
• Pearl farming: Local economy includes cultivation and farming of black pearls in the lagoon, which are sold on-island and exported.

What to See #

• Rikitea village: The main settlement on the island, located on the sheltered western shore of the lagoon; contains the local administration, shops and the island's main jetty and airstrip access point.
• Lagoon and motus: A shallow lagoon ringed by motus (small islets) used for pearl farming and small-scale fishing; the lagoon provides sheltered anchorage and snorkeling close to shore.
• Mangareva (Rikitea) Airport: A small regional airfield serving inter-island flights to and from Tahiti and nearby Gambier atolls, located near Rikitea.
