Mandara Mountains
Mountains Volcanic mountain range along Cameroon–Nigeria border, biodiverse
The Mandara Mountains straddle the Cameroon-Nigeria frontier with volcanic peaks, terraced fields and stone hill villages. Hikers and cultural visitors come for mountain trails, traditional crafts and wide Sahelian views.
The Mandara Mountains are a compact volcanic mountain chain straddling the border region between northern Cameroon and adjacent areas of Nigeria. The range is notable for rugged hills, volcanic plugs and steep escarpments.
Local communities occupy hilltop villages and cultivated terraces carved into slopes; the area supports mixed agriculture and pastoralism adapted to the rugged terrain. The mountains also host diverse cultural groups with long-standing local traditions tied to the landscape.
The range formed through volcanic activity and erosion and is distinct from the higher Cameroon Highlands to the south; its volcanic plugs and rocky ridges dominate the local topography. Many peaks are isolated domes rather than a continuous high ridge.
Geographically the Mandara Mountains lie in the Far North Region of Cameroon near the international border with Nigeria, occupying a transitional zone between Sahelian plains and more elevated central highlands.
- Terraced villages: The landscape is dominated by steep volcanic hills and rocky outcrops that support terraced agriculture and dense local settlement in valleys and plateaus.
