Mana Pools National Park, together with the Sapi and Chewore safari areas, is a riverine protected landscape on the Zambezi River in northern Zimbabwe known for its alluvial floodplains and abundant wildlife. The area is valued for its relatively intact savanna and river ecosystems.
The area has been managed for conservation through national park and safari area designations to protect its wildlife and riverine habitats; it is one of Zimbabwe’s key conservation landscapes along the middle Zambezi.
The park and adjoining safari areas lie along the Zambezi River in northern Zimbabwe within Mashonaland West Province, occupying low-lying floodplain terrain adjacent to the river channel.
- Seasonal floodplain dynamics: Seasonal flooding of the Zambezi shapes the park's ecology; the dry season concentrates game along permanent water and is a preferred time for wildlife viewing.
- Safari activities: The area is known for walking and canoe safaris that allow close observation of riverine wildlife, including elephants, hippos, crocodiles and large predators.
What to See #
- Mana Pools floodplain: The floodplain and riverine islands along a stretch of the middle Zambezi River that seasonally inundate, creating habitats for water-dependent wildlife and supporting rich grazing and foraging areas.
- Sapi and Chewore safari areas: Adjacent wildlife areas and safari concessions designated as Sapi and Chewore, which function as extensions of the protected landscape offering game-viewing and low-density tourism operations.
How to Get to Mana Pools National Park, Sapi and Chewore Safari Areas #
Mana Pools and the adjoining Sapi and Chewore safari areas are in northern Zimbabwe along the Zambezi River and are commonly visited from Harare. Most visitors fly from Harare to small charter airstrips in the Mana Pools area (camp airstrips) or drive north from Harare; road transfers from Harare are long and use main northbound roads before turning onto unpaved access tracks, so many travelers opt for charter flights to camp airstrips arranged by safari operators.
If driving, arrange transfer with your lodge or a 4x4 operator-roads within the park are unpaved and require a knowledgeable driver. Exact road routes and transfer times depend on your entry point and camp bookings.
Tips for Visiting Mana Pools National Park, Sapi and Chewore Safari Areas #
- Plan a visit in the dry season (roughly May-October) when game concentrates on the remaining water and visibility for wildlife viewing-this is also the best time for walking safaris.
- Book walking safaris with authorized guides: Mana Pools is one of the few national parks where guided walking is permitted and it offers markedly different wildlife encounters than vehicle-based drives.
- If you want fewer vehicles, include Sapi or Chewore areas in your itinerary; they are generally less visited than the core Mana Pools camp areas and can feel far quieter on game drives.
