Mamre

Mamre is a biblical site near Hebron in the southern hill country of historical Palestine, long identified with the location where Abraham is said to have hosted guests. It is known chiefly for the traditional oak associated with those stories and for its continuous role in pilgrimage and commemoration.

The site contains memorial features and a compact complex of religious buildings; the principal visible highlights are the ancient commemorative oak and the adjoining monastery and chapel area. Interpretive markers and small courtyards give visitors a sense of the longstanding cultic importance even though the visible remains are modest in scale.

Mamre is named in the Hebrew Bible and later sources. Over centuries the place has been used as a shrine and pilgrimage point by Jews, Christians, and Muslims; a Russian Orthodox presence erected a church and monastic buildings at the modern shrine in the 19th century. Archaeological work in the wider area has identified remains from antiquity, tying the location to a long occupation sequence.

The site sits a few kilometres northwest of the city of Hebron in the southern West Bank. The landscape is a mix of cultivated terraces and rolling limestone hills with the shrine located adjacent to local roads that connect to regional towns.
