The Maloti Mountains are a highland range forming the elevated interior of Lesotho and extending into parts of adjacent South Africa. They are the backbone of the Lesotho Highlands and include the highest terrain in southern Africa.
Outdoor recreation includes multi-day hikes, mountain passes and highland scenery; the range contains dramatic plateaus and steep valleys with high-altitude grasslands. Routes cross saddles and ridges and provide access to remote communities and pastoral landscapes.
The mountains have been inhabited and used for grazing by local peoples for centuries and have defined Lesotho’s interior geography since precolonial times. They later formed the basis for development of roads, passes and national parks.
Predominantly within the Kingdom of Lesotho, with portions extending into eastern South Africa. The range dominates Lesotho’s interior and includes the region’s highest peaks and plateaus.

The Maloti Range is reached from Lesotho’s capital Maseru and other towns by road; border crossings from South Africa are common. Travel inside the range often requires 4x4 transport and local guides for remote trails.
