Maligne Lake is a glacially fed lake in Jasper National Park, Alberta, Canada, known for its deep blue water and mountain-framed scenery. It is roughly 22 kilometres in length and is one of the most photographed locations in the Canadian Rockies.
The lake’s best-known feature is Spirit Island, a tiny rocky islet set against steep mountain slopes; boat tours and canoe trips provide the standard ways to reach and photograph the island. The shoreline also offers hiking access to viewpoints and backcountry routes into the surrounding mountains.
Maligne Lake became a focal point for tourism in Jasper National Park in the early 20th century as roads and visitor services developed, and it remains a center for guided boat excursions and outdoor recreation. How to Get to Maligne Lake #
Maligne Lake lies inside Jasper National Park and is reached from the town of Jasper via the signed Maligne Lake Road. The drive from Jasper is approximately 44 km and takes about 40-50 minutes; the road is well maintained and scenic. In summer there are park shuttle services and sightseeing tours from Jasper that drop visitors at the lake parking area, from which the lakeshore and main facilities are a short walk.

- Arrive at Maligne Lake at first light to photograph Spirit Island with calm water reflections and to beat the mid‑day tour‑boat crowds; parking fills quickly in high season.
- Book the Maligne Lake boat cruise in advance during summer-taking the boat is the easiest way to reach Spirit Island and avoids the long hike and limited shore access.
- If the boat is full, opt for one of the shorter shoreline walks (such as the Mary Schäffer Loop) for quieter viewpoints that many day‑visitors miss.
