Maligne Lake

Maligne Lake is a glacially fed lake in Jasper National Park, Alberta, Canada, known for its deep blue water and mountain-framed scenery. It is roughly 22 kilometres in length and is one of the most photographed locations in the Canadian Rockies.

The lake’s best-known feature is Spirit Island, a tiny rocky islet set against steep mountain slopes; boat tours and canoe trips provide the standard ways to reach and photograph the island. The shoreline also offers hiking access to viewpoints and backcountry routes into the surrounding mountains.

Maligne Lake became a focal point for tourism in Jasper National Park in the early 20th century as roads and visitor services developed, and it remains a center for guided boat excursions and outdoor recreation. The site’s scenic character has been promoted in park literature and photography for more than a century.

The lake sits in the Maligne Valley about 44 kilometres southeast of the town of Jasper, within the boundaries of Jasper National Park in Alberta.
