Malegaon Travel Guide
City City in Maharashtra, India
Noise and looms define Malegaon: textile mills, crowded bazaars and tandoor stalls. Visitors pass through for market bargaining, strong Muslim street food - biryani and kebab - and local mosques and shrines.
Why Visit Malegaon? #
A working textile city with an energetic industrial heart, Malegaon draws visitors interested in India’s powerloom clusters and bustling textile bazaars where bolts of fabric and tailoring workshops line the streets. Religious diversity is on show during Ramadan and Eid processions, offering a window into local Muslim traditions and street food stalls. Short cultural walks through market lanes reveal local snacks and a tightly knit community shaped by trade and craft.
Who's Malegaon For?
Malegaon is an industrial textile hub (Malegaon MIDC and Old City cloth markets) with many small factories and trading firms. Good for B2B visits, factory tours and sourcing; simple business hotels and travel logistics around the bus stand make short stays straightforward.
Street kebabs, spicy biryanis and Marathi-Muslim snacks around Old City and the main market are cheap and satisfying (INR 50-200). You won’t find fine dining, but the local chaats and bakery sweets give a strong, authentic taste of the town.
Not a classic backpacker hub, but very budget-friendly: basic guesthouses and lodges near the bus station and MIDC from INR 300-800. Good for short cultural stops and low-cost travel between Nashik/Manmad on a shoestring.
Couples will find quiet riverside walks along the Girna and low-cost local restaurants in the Old City for intimate, low-key evenings. It’s best for sencillo, authentic outings rather than romantic luxury - think local tea stalls and sunset by the river.

How to Get to Malegaon
Malegaon is easiest to reach by rail - Malegaon Junction (MLN) sits on the Central Railway line and sees regular passenger and express services. For air travel, Nashik (Ozar/ISK) and Aurangabad (IXU) are the nearest commercial airports; from either you'll continue by taxi, train or state bus to reach the city.
Nashik / Ozar Airport (ISK): Nashik Ozar (often called Nashik Airport) is the closest commercial airport to Malegaon. From the airport you can take a prepaid taxi or app taxi to Malegaon - journey time is typically about 1-1.5 hours depending on traffic; expect taxi fares roughly ₹1,200-2,000. There aren’t frequent direct public buses from the airport, so taxis or a transfer into Nashik city (then MSRTC buses/trains) are the usual option.
Aurangabad Airport (IXU): Aurangabad is a larger airport with more scheduled flights than Nashik. By road the trip to Malegaon normally takes about 3-4 hours; taxi fares are typically in the ₹3,000-4,500 range. There are also state-run and private coaches between Aurangabad and Malegaon (travel time 3-4.5 hours) with fares usually ₹150-350.
Jalgaon Airport (JLG): Jalgaon has limited domestic services but can be useful if schedules match. Road travel from Jalgaon to Malegaon is about 1.5-2 hours by car; expect taxi fares around ₹1,200-2,000. Trains and state buses also connect Jalgaon and Malegaon if you prefer a cheaper surface option.
Train: Malegaon Junction (MLN) is on the Central Railway (Mumbai-Bhusawal) corridor and is the most convenient rail arrival point. Regular passenger and express trains link Malegaon with Mumbai, Bhusawal, Jalgaon and other regional centres; express trains from Mumbai typically take roughly 4-6 hours depending on the service. Ticket prices vary by class - unreserved/second sitting for short runs is inexpensive (roughly ₹30-150), sleeper/3A for longer journeys will be higher (₹200-800 depending on distance and class).
Bus: Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) and private operators run frequent services to and from Malegaon Central Bus Station. Popular routes include Nashik-Malegaon (about 1.5-2 hours, fares roughly ₹40-120) and longer services to Mumbai or Aurangabad (4-6 hours, fares commonly ₹150-400 depending on bus type). Local shared buses and private coaches are widely available for intercity travel.
How to Get Around Malegaon
The best way to reach Malegaon is by train (Malegaon Junction) for reliability and cost; state buses offer a convenient alternative from Nashik, Aurangabad and Mumbai. Inside the city, auto-rickshaws and shared autos are the quickest way to get around short distances, while walking is perfectly practical in the central markets.
- Train (₹30-800) - Malegaon Junction (MLN) is the city's main rail hub on the Mumbai-Bhusawal route. Express and passenger trains connect Malegaon with Mumbai, Bhusawal, Jalgaon and nearby towns; trains are the most reliable way to avoid road traffic for intercity travel. Book reserved seats for comfort on longer journeys; unreserved coaches and local passenger trains are cheap but can be crowded at peak times.
- State & Private Buses (MSRTC) (₹20-400) - MSRTC runs frequent services linking Malegaon with Nashik, Mumbai, Jalgaon and Aurangabad; private operators provide additional luxury and semi-sleeper coaches. Buses are economical and cover many routes that trains don't - expect lower fares but longer journey times on some routes. Buy tickets at the bus station or online for popular services, and be prepared for variable coach quality on private runs.
- Auto-rickshaw (₹20-150) - Auto-rickshaws are the workhorse for short hops inside Malegaon and to nearby suburbs. Fares are short-distance and negotiable in many places - ask for the approximate fare beforehand or insist on the meter if available. Autos are the fastest way to move around congested market areas, but carry small change and be ready to haggle for fixed-price rides to farther suburbs.
- Shared autos / Tempos (₹10-60) - Shared autos and small shared tempos operate on popular local corridors and are the cheapest option for short-to-medium trips. They run fixed or semi-fixed routes and drop passengers along the way; fares are low but services can be crowded and timing irregular. Use these for short commutes if you're comfortable with limited luggage and a local-rider experience.
- Taxis & App Taxis (₹150-600) - Metered taxis and app-based services (where available) provide door-to-door comfort for airport transfers and longer trips. Availability of apps such as Ola may be limited compared with big cities, so pre-book a local taxi or arrange a car through your hotel when needed. Taxis are significantly more expensive than autos but useful for groups, night travel or when carrying luggage.
- Walking - Malegaon's central market and neighbourhoods are compact and best explored on foot - walking is practical for short errands and market shopping. Sidewalks can be uneven and traffic busy, so wear sensible shoes and watch for vehicles when crossing streets. Walking is the easiest way to soak up the local atmosphere and discover small eateries and shops.
