Malecón
Road Seaside promenade and social hub in Havana
Havana’s Malecón functions as a six-kilometre seawall and promenade where locals and visitors gather for evening strolls, sunset views across the bay, street vendors, improvised fishing and sightlines toward Castillo del Morro.
The Malecón is Havana’s famous waterfront esplanade and seawall that runs along the northern shore of the city in La Habana Province, forming a major public promenade and city landmark. It was constructed in stages during the 20th century and links several central neighborhoods.
The seafront offers expansive views across the Straits of Florida, informal social spaces where people gather for sunset, fishing and street life, and a continuous route for walking and driving of about 8 kilometres. Architectural façades, mixed-use buildings and open areas along the Malecón reflect Havana’s urban history and make it a convenient route between Old Havana, Vedado and Miramar.
The seawall and promenade were built in stages during the 20th century to protect Havana’s shore and provide a direct coastal boulevard; construction and extensions continued through the first half of the century. Over time the Malecón has become an important civic and cultural meeting place.
The Malecón sits on the northern edge of Havana, running along the city’s coast from the historic Old Havana district westward through Centro Habana, Vedado and into the western districts adjacent to Miramar.
