Malaita
Island Large Solomon Islands island with traditional cultures
Malaita, one of the larger Solomon Islands, retains strong traditional cultures and shell-money practices; travelers visit for village-based cultural exchanges, coastal canoeing, reef diving and inland treks.
Malaita is a large island in the Solomon Islands and the country’s most populous island, forming the bulk of Malaita Province. It is a significant cultural centre for a number of distinct local languages and traditions.
The island offers coastal lagoon systems, village-based cultural tourism, and forested interior terrain. Key visitor experiences include the provincial town of Auki with ferry and air links, the stilt villages and shell-money traditions in the Lau Lagoon, informal coastal diving and snorkeling opportunities, and community-based cultural tours.
The island has been inhabited for thousands of years by Austronesian and Melanesian peoples. It became part of the British Solomon Islands Protectorate in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and formed part of the independent Solomon Islands after 1978.
Malaita lies to the east of the central Solomon Islands chain, immediately northeast of Guadalcanal, and is fringed by coral reefs and shallow lagoons with a rugged, forested interior. Auki is the principal town and transport gateway on the island’s northwest coast.
- Transport: Regular domestic flights and passenger ferries connect the island's main settlement, Auki, with Honiara, making it accessible despite limited road connections.
- Cultural highlights: Traditional village visits often feature demonstrations of shell-money, custom dances, and canoe transport that are distinct cultural highlights not visible in urban centres.
What to See #
- Auki: Auki is the provincial capital and main transport hub with scheduled flights and ferry links to the Solomon Islands capital and other islands.
- Lau Lagoon: Lau Lagoon is a network of shallow, sheltered waterways and stilt-village communities noted for traditional shell-money production and boat-based daily life.
How to Get to Malaita #
Malaita is served from Honiara, the Solomon Islands capital. Regular domestic flights operate from Honiara (Henderson) to Auki, the main town on Malaita (short flight of roughly 20-40 minutes depending on routing); there are also scheduled passenger ferries between Honiara and Malaita (overnight or multi‑day services). From Auki town local roads and short taxi rides provide access to settlements and trailheads on the island.
Tips for Visiting Malaita #
- Fly into Auki (Malaita's main town) or book a reliable passenger boat from Honiara and plan connections carefully - interisland services run to fixed timetables and delays are common without a buffer day.
- Arrange a local guide in advance for cultural village visits and walking routes: Malaita has strong customary practices and a guide will help you reach shell‑money sites, village museums and navigate local etiquette.
- Avoid traveling on secondary roads after dark and confirm boat departures the day before - road infrastructure and interisland services can be limited, so build flexibility into your schedule.
Best Time to Visit Malaita #
Visit Malaita in the drier months (roughly May-October) for more reliable weather and easier travel between islands.
