Mala Paklenica
Canyon Scenic canyon in Paklenica National Park
Mala Paklenica forms the smaller gorge in Croatia’s Paklenica area, carved into karst limestone. Climbers and hikers use its routes and trails to access canyon floors, caves and rocky faces.
Mala Paklenica is the smaller of the two main canyons in Paklenica National Park on the southern slopes of the Velebit mountains, near the Adriatic coast of Croatia. It is a steep limestone gorge noted for its dramatic cliffs and karst landscape.
The gorge offers a rocky riverbed, sheer canyon walls and a compact network of footpaths and climbing lines; it is frequented by hikers and climbers as an access corridor into the higher Velebit terrain. The scale is smaller than the adjacent Velika Paklenica canyon but still features high cliffs and narrow passages that are typical of the park.
The canyons formed through long-term fluvial erosion of limestone in the Velebit massif. The area is part of Paklenica National Park, which protects the canyon systems and surrounding mountain habitats and has been managed for conservation and recreation in the modern era.
