Makhtesh Ramon National Park
Building Desert erosion crater and national park in Negev
Makhtesh Ramon in Israel’s Negev is a large erosion crater with layered rock faces and desert plateaus; tourists take jeep tours, hike trails and camp under clear desert skies.
Makhtesh Ramon National Park preserves the large erosion cirque known as Ramon Crater in Israel’s Negev Desert and is a major geological and ecological reserve in the Southern District. The crater is a distinctive landform and a central feature of the national park.
The park’s main highlights are the sweeping panoramic viewpoints along the crater rim and extensively exposed rock strata that show multiple geological layers. Several marked hiking trails and gravel roads cross the plateau and descend into the crater; routes range from short viewpoint walks to full-day hikes and 4x4 tracks. The nearby town of Mitzpe Ramon provides the primary visitor facilities and access points.
The crater is an erosion feature formed over millions of years as softer rocks were worn away, leaving a closed valley of harder ridges and benches. The area was mapped and studied by geologists in the 20th century and has been protected to conserve its geological, ecological and cultural values.
The park sits in southern Israel’s Negev Desert on the northern edge of the Negev Highlands, with Mitzpe Ramon located on the crater’s northern rim. It occupies arid plateau and canyon terrain and is the dominant landscape feature for the surrounding district.
- Viewing tips: Best light for photography is early morning and late afternoon when the crater's layers and ridges show the strongest shadow definition.
- Practical note: Temperatures are highest in summer and many trails are easiest in cooler months; bring water and sun protection for all visits.
What to See #
- Ramon Crater: A large erosion cirque known as the Ramon Crater, an elongated depression about 40 km long, up to 10 km wide and roughly 500 m deep at its maximum. The crater shows layered sedimentary rocks, desert pavements and fossilized marine deposits that form the park's core landscape.
- Mitzpe Ramon Visitor Centre: The visitor complex and main lookout at the town of Mitzpe Ramon on the crater's northern rim, offering viewing platforms, an information centre and access to hiking and off-road routes along the rim.

Tips for Visiting Makhtesh Ramon National Park #
- Begin at the Mitzpe Ramon visitor center on the crater rim to pick up maps, current trail conditions and recommended viewpoints before driving into the park - it's the best single orientation point for first‑time visitors.
- Schedule rim drives and short hikes for early morning or late afternoon when the low light shows the makhtesh's layers best and daytime temperatures are milder; midday in summer is extremely hot and most overlooks are exposed.
- Don't rely on unpaved tracks unless you know them: stick to signed roads and trails or book a guided 4x4 tour for deeper crater access - some scenic routes require high‑clearance vehicles and local knowledge.
