Maine Road
Stadium Former Manchester football stadium and historic sports ground
Former football stadium in Manchester, once the home of Manchester City until 2003; the site and club history draw football fans interested in stadium heritage.
Maine Road was a football stadium in the Moss Side area of Manchester that served as the home ground of Manchester City Football Club for most of the 20th century. The ground was one of England’s major club stadiums while in use and hosted thousands of league matches and cup fixtures.
The stadium opened in the early 1920s and remained Manchester City’s home until the club relocated to a new purpose‑built stadium in 2003. After the move the Maine Road site was cleared and redeveloped for other uses.
During its years of operation the ground was notable for its large standing and seated terraces and for hosting domestic cup ties as well as regular league fixtures. It lay in the residential district of Moss Side to the south of Manchester city centre.
The stadium site has since been redeveloped and is no longer an active sports venue.
- Primary use and years: served as the home ground of Manchester City Football Club between 1923 and 2003 before the club moved to a new stadium.
How to Get to Maine Road #
Maine Road was located in the Moss Side district of Manchester, roughly 2 miles southwest of Manchester city centre. When visiting the site area today you can reach Moss Side by local buses from Manchester Piccadilly or Victoria; it is also a walkable distance (around 30-45 minutes) from central Manchester depending on your starting point. Note the original stadium was demolished and the site has since been redeveloped.
Tips for Visiting Maine Road #
- Maine Road no longer exists as a functioning stadium site and has been redeveloped for housing; there is little for visitors to see at the former pitch itself, so don't expect stadium tours or matchday facilities.
- If you're interested in Manchester City's history, visit the City-related exhibits at the National Football Museum and the Etihad Stadium instead; and if you go to the old Maine Road area treat it as a residential neighbourhood and respect private property.
Best Time to Visit Maine Road #
Maine Road no longer exists as an operational stadium-the original ground was demolished and the site redeveloped, so there is no matchday venue to visit.
