Main image

The Maikop kurgan is an Early Bronze Age burial mound near the city of Maikop in the Republic of Adygea, Russia; it gave its name to the Maikop culture and produced a notably rich assemblage of metalwork.

The site is a large tumulus containing elite burials and associated grave goods; while the mound itself can be visited externally, the main artefacts from the excavations are conserved and displayed in museum collections. The kurgan is important for understanding early metallurgy and social complexity in the northern Caucasus.

The mound was constructed by communities of the Maikop cultural horizon during the Early Bronze Age. Archaeological excavation in the late 19th century revealed multiple burial chambers and a rich inventory of metalwork and jewellery, which established the kurgan’s archaeological significance.

It lies on the Kuban river plain near the city of Maikop in Adygea, within the northern Caucasus region of Russia.

  • Age: Linked to the Early Bronze Age Maikop culture, approximately 3700-3000 BCE.
  • Finds: Many of the grave goods recovered from the mound, including gold and other metalwork, are held in Russian museum collections.
