The basin containing the lake was shaped by Andean tectonics and Quaternary glacial and volcanic processes. Human use has been primarily local and rural rather than urban or industrial.
The lake sits in the eastern part of Los Ríos Region, in the Andean foothills of southern Chile, east of the region’s coastal lowlands.
