Maiden’s Tower (Kız Kulesi) is a small tower standing on a tiny islet at the southern entrance to the Bosphorus in Istanbul. Its isolated position at the water’s edge makes it a recognizable city landmark.
Visitors commonly view the tower from ferries and shore promenades on both the European and Asian sides or reach it by a short private-boat shuttle to the islet; the tower building houses a café/restaurant and exhibition space. The compact site offers 360-degree views across the Bosphorus, the Sea of Marmara and nearby shoreline districts.
The structure on the islet has been rebuilt and repurposed repeatedly from Byzantine times through the Ottoman period, serving as a lighthouse, defensive post and customs station at various dates. The present superstructure reflects later Ottoman-era rebuilding and restoration works.
Geographically the tower sits a short distance off the Üsküdar-Salacak shore on the Asian side and is visible from the Galata and Eminönü waterfronts on the European side of Istanbul.

Maiden’s Tower (Kız Kulesi) sits on a small islet off the Salacak shore of Üsküdar in Istanbul. Take the Marmaray rail to Üsküdar station (or ferry services to Üsküdar pier), then walk a few minutes to the Salacak/Üsküdar boat landing - short public boats and private launches run from there to the tower. Taxis and car ferries to Üsküdar are also common if you arrive by road.
Tips for Visiting Maiden's Tower #
- Visit early in the morning (just after the first boats) to avoid the mid-day tourist boats and get unobstructed photos of the tower against the Bosphorus; evenings are also atmospheric but much busier.
- Take the short public boat from the Üsküdar/Salacak shore rather than joining large Bosphorus tour boats-the crossings are frequent and land you closest to the tower's dock.
- Most visitors focus on the tower itself; walk the Salacak waterfront on the Asian shore for classic framed photos of the tower with Üsküdar skyline and to see it from a quieter vantage point.
