Mahasthangarh is an extensive archaeological citadel site in northern Bangladesh and is one of the country’s oldest known urban centres. Its fortified mound complex records occupation from the early historic period.
The site was an important regional capital in antiquity and is identified with the ancient city of Pundranagara mentioned in South Asian texts. Archaeological excavations have revealed layers of occupation from the early historic period through later medieval phases.
Mahasthangarh is located in Bogra District in northern Bangladesh, situated on the floodplain of the Karatoya river and accessible from regional towns in Rajshahi Division.

How to Get to Mahasthangarh #
Mahasthangarh is the large archaeological mound north of Bogura (Bogra) town in Rajshahi Division. From Bogura town centre you can take a local bus, shared auto/CNG or a taxi north toward Mahasthan; the drive is a short one (roughly a 15-30 minute drive depending on traffic) and there is a short walk from the roadside parking/stop to the site entrance.
If you are coming from Dhaka, regular intercity buses and trains serve Bogura; from Bogura’s bus or rail stations use local transport onward to Mahasthangarh.
Tips for Visiting Mahasthangarh #
- Go in the cooler months (late autumn to early spring) or early morning to avoid heat and the busiest parts of the day; weekdays are noticeably quieter than weekends.
- Start at the site's main entrance and allow time to visit the nearby Mahasthan Museum before walking the mounds- the museum provides context that makes the ruins easier to interpret.
- Don't skip the outer ramparts and smaller satellite mounds around the central citadel; these areas are quieter and reveal layers of habitation that many visitors miss-consider hiring a local guide in Bogra for archaeological details.
