Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga

The Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga is a major Hindu temple dedicated to Shiva located in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh, India. It is one of the twelve traditional Jyotirlinga shrines and is an important pilgrimage site.

The complex centers on the main sanctum that houses the principal lingam, revered as a self-manifested and south-facing (dakshinamukhi) form of Shiva. Pilgrims attend regular puja and ritual services; a distinctive pre-dawn ash ceremony is a noted feature of temple worship. The surrounding temple precinct includes ghats on the Kshipra River used for ritual bathing and processions.

The site has ancient religious origins and has been a focus of Shaiva worship for many centuries. The present temple complex largely reflects construction and rebuilding carried out in later historic periods, with significant remodelling in the early modern era.

The temple sits in the historic city of Ujjain on the banks of the Kshipra River in western Madhya Pradesh, about 90-100 kilometres west of the state capital Bhopal by road.
