How to Get to Mahabad
Mahabad is served primarily by road links from regional airports and bus terminals rather than by rail. The nearest larger airports are Urmia (OMH) and Tabriz (TBZ); most international visitors connect via Tehran and then fly or bus to the northwest. Expect to finish the last leg of any air journey by bus or shared taxi.
Urmia Airport (OMH): Urmia (also written Orumiyeh) is the closest larger airport with regular domestic connections. From OMH you can take a shared taxi or private transfer to Mahabad; driving time is roughly 2-2.5 hours depending on traffic and road conditions. Shared taxi/minibus fares typically run about 40,000-100,000 toman and private taxis cost more (expect several times that).
Tabriz International Airport (TBZ): Tabriz is a larger regional hub with more frequent flights from Tehran and other cities. The road trip from Tabriz to Mahabad takes about 3-4 hours by car; express intercity buses and shared vans connect the two cities. Bus fares from Tabriz to Mahabad are commonly in the 60,000-180,000 toman range and private transfers cost more.
Tehran Imam Khomeini (IKA) / Mehrabad (THR): International arrivals usually land in Tehran; from there most travelers fly domestically to Tabriz or Urmia and continue by road to Mahabad. Allow at least 5-8 hours total travel time (including domestic flight + road transfer) and expect domestic-flight + ground-transfer combinations to start in the low hundreds of thousands of toman and rise with faster/private transfers.
Train: Mahabad is not on Iran’s national rail network. The nearest major railway is Tabriz Railway Station (Istgah-e Rah Ahan-e Tabriz); from there you need to change to a bus or shared taxi for the 3-4 hour road journey to Mahabad. Expect the onward road leg to cost roughly 60,000-180,000 toman by bus or shared van.
Bus: Regular intercity buses and minibuses run to Mahabad from regional terminals - especially from Urmia (Orumiyeh) Bus Terminal and Tabriz Central Bus Terminal. Bus travel times: roughly 2-2.5 hours from Urmia and about 3-4 hours from Tabriz depending on route and stops. Fares are commonly in the 50,000-180,000 toman range for standard coaches; faster or private vans cost more.
How to Get Around Mahabad
Mahabad is easiest to reach by road from nearby regional airports (Urmia, Tabriz) or by intercity bus; there is no direct national rail service. For getting around, shared taxis and minibuses give the best balance of cost and convenience for regional travel, while taxis and walking work best inside the town.
- Taxi (city) (20,000-70,000 toman) - Metered and private taxis are available in Mahabad and are the fastest way to reach specific addresses, hotels or the bus terminal. Negotiate a price in advance for longer rides or insist the driver use the meter for short trips. Taxis are convenient late at night when buses and shared vans are less frequent.
- Shared taxis / minibuses (savari) (10,000-40,000 toman) - Shared vans and dolmuş-style taxis are the backbone of regional travel - frequent, cheap and used by locals for intercity routes (Urmia, Tabriz and surrounding towns). They leave when full, so departures are irregular but plentiful during daytime. Bring small change and be prepared for tight seating; these are the best value for shorter intercity hops.
- Intercity buses (50,000-180,000 toman) - Standard intercity coaches connect Mahabad with Urmia, Tabriz and other provincial centres from the city's bus terminal. Buses are comfortable and reliable for longer routes and usually follow scheduled departures. Book in advance during holidays; luggage is handled by staff and fares are fixed at the terminal.
- Car rental / private transfer (600,000-1,500,000 toman (day/transfer)) - Hiring a car or a private driver gives the most flexibility for exploring the lake district and mountain roads around Mahabad. Roads in the region can be narrow and winter weather affects travel times, so use an experienced driver in winter. Prices vary widely - negotiate a full-day rate or intercity transfer price before departure.
- Local buses / minibuses (2,000-10,000 toman) - Within Mahabad there are a few local minibuses and small buses serving main neighbourhoods and the bazaar; routes are informal and fares are very low. Expect irregular schedules and drivers who may not speak English - ask hotel staff for the right stop names. These are useful for short city hops but not for reliable timetabled transport.
- Walking - Mahabad's central areas and bazaar are compact and best explored on foot; walking lets you navigate alleyways and markets inaccessible by car. Wear sensible shoes for uneven pavements and allow extra time in hot weather. Walking is the simplest, cheapest way to absorb the city's character.
