Madurodam is a miniature park in The Hague that displays scale models of Dutch cities, landmarks and infrastructure at a consistent 1:25 scale. Founded in the early 1950s, it functions as both a tourist attraction and an educational exhibit on Dutch engineering and urban design.

Created as a memorial and educational site in 1952, the park was developed to commemorate George Maduro and to showcase Dutch achievements in a miniature, accessible format. The collection has been expanded and updated over time to reflect changing infrastructure and urban developments.

How to Get to Madurodam #

Madurodam is in The Hague (Scheveningen area). From Den Haag Centraal take tram 9 toward Scheveningen (about a 10-15 minute ride) and alight at the Madurodam stop, then walk a few minutes to the park entrance. By car it’s a short drive (around 5-10 minutes, a few kilometres) from The Hague city centre via Laan van Meerdervoort/Scheveningseweg; on-site parking and drop-off are available.

Tips for Visiting Madurodam #

  • Aim to arrive at opening or late in the afternoon and visit on a weekday to avoid coach groups; buying tickets online shortens entry on busy days.
  • Start your route away from the main plaza and work around the park (rather than heading straight to the most famous models) - that way you often see popular displays like the Port of Rotterdam and Schiphol scale models before lines build up.
  • Take time at the interactive stations: many visitors treat Madurodam as a photo stop and miss the hands-on buttons and exhibits that animate models and explain Dutch engineering and water management.
