Madonie is a mountain range in northern central Sicily that forms the core of the Madonie Regional Natural Park, noted for its limestone peaks and diverse habitats. The range includes peaks rising to nearly 2,000 metres and supports a mix of Mediterranean and montane flora.

Trails and forest roads cross the park, providing opportunities for hiking, wildlife observation and visits to traditional mountain villages. Key features include karst landscapes, panoramic viewpoints and seasonal mountain flora that contrast with Sicily’s coastal lowlands.

The Madonie have long been inhabited and used for pastoralism and small-scale agriculture; the area gained protected status to conserve its geological features, biodiversity and cultural landscapes. Conservation efforts support traditional land uses alongside visitor management.

The range lies in northern Sicily between Palermo and the Nebrodi Mountains, rising inland from the Tyrrhenian coast and forming a prominent highland zone visible from surrounding lowlands.

  • Access and landscape: The Madonie area combines mountainous terrain with traditional hilltop villages; roads and marked trails make it accessible for day trips from coastal towns in northern Sicily.

What to See #

  • Pizzo Carbonara: Pizzo Carbonara, the highest peak in the Madonie range at just under 2,000 metres, offering alpine pastures and panoramic views of northern Sicily.

How to Get to Madonie #

The Madonie Park is reached by road from Palermo (roughly 1-1.5 hours depending on which park entrance). Regional bus services connect some towns, but a car is the most flexible option to explore dispersed villages and trailheads.
