Madonie is a mountain range in northern central Sicily that forms the core of the Madonie Regional Natural Park, noted for its limestone peaks and diverse habitats. The range includes peaks rising to nearly 2,000 metres and supports a mix of Mediterranean and montane flora.
Trails and forest roads cross the park, providing opportunities for hiking, wildlife observation and visits to traditional mountain villages. Key features include karst landscapes, panoramic viewpoints and seasonal mountain flora that contrast with Sicily’s coastal lowlands.
The Madonie have long been inhabited and used for pastoralism and small-scale agriculture; the area gained protected status to conserve its geological features, biodiversity and cultural landscapes. Conservation efforts support traditional land uses alongside visitor management.
The range lies in northern Sicily between Palermo and the Nebrodi Mountains, rising inland from the Tyrrhenian coast and forming a prominent highland zone visible from surrounding lowlands.
