Madera Canyon (Arizona)

Madera Canyon is a steep-sided canyon on the slopes of the Santa Rita Mountains in southern Arizona, managed as part of the Coronado National Forest. It is a well-known natural area for birdwatching, hiking and outdoor recreation.

The canyon contains multiple trailheads and picnic areas that serve day hikers and naturalists, and routes lead up into higher elevations of the Santa Ritas including approaches toward Mount Wrightson. Many visitors come specifically for close-up views of hummingbirds and other mountain species.

The area has been managed by the U.S. Forest Service with road and trail infrastructure to support public recreation and conservation. Over time facilities such as picnic areas and campground sites have been maintained to serve visitors.

Madera Canyon lies on the southern slopes of the Santa Rita Mountains in Pima County, Arizona, southeast of Tucson within the Coronado National Forest.

• Birding hotspot: Bring binoculars and field guides - the canyon is widely known for its birdlife, including resident and migratory species that draw birdwatchers year-round. Early morning is often best for sightings.
• Hiking access: Trailheads in the canyon provide routes to higher-elevation trails and to Mount Wrightson; expect elevation gain and variable conditions on longer hikes.
