Mackinac National Park
National Park Historic U.S. park on Mackinac Island, early national park
Mackinac Island’s historic district, once part of Mackinac National Park, draws visitors for Fort Mackinac, preserved Victorian architecture, horse-drawn carriages and bicycle paths across the island on Lake Huron.
Mackinac National Park was a United States national park established in 1875 on Mackinac Island in Lake Huron and was the first national park created east of the Mississippi River.
The area designated as the national park included scenic shorelines, wooded areas and historic sites that today are managed within Mackinac Island State Park; notable features preserved in the park area include historic military works and natural limestone formations. Visitors to the island experience car-free streets, horse-drawn carriages and numerous short trails and overlooks used for walking and viewing the lake.
Created by Congress in 1875 to protect the island’s scenic and historic resources, the national park designation remained in federal hands until 1895 when the park was transferred to Michigan and re-established as a state park. The park’s legacy continues through the protected landscapes and preserved historic structures on the island.
Located on Mackinac Island in Lake Huron between Michigan’s Upper and Lower Peninsulas, the island is reached by ferry from nearby mainland towns such as St. Ignace and Mackinaw City.
