Macedonia Square, Skopje

Macedonia Square is the principal public plaza in the centre of Skopje, North Macedonia, functioning as the city’s main ceremonial and gathering space. It is a focal point for civic events and a concentration of national monuments and official buildings.

The square contains numerous statues and architectural façades added during a major city redevelopment project in the 2010s, creating a dense ensemble of monuments and museums around the open plaza. A large equestrian statue often called the ‘Warrior on a Horse’ is the most visually prominent feature.

The remodelling and monument programme in the 2010s reshaped the square’s appearance and added museums, memorials and new public spaces; these works are central to the square’s contemporary identity. The area continues to function as the city’s main public and ceremonial space.

Geographically Macedonia Square sits on the north bank of the Vardar River in central Skopje, adjacent to the historic Stone Bridge and within walking distance of government buildings and commercial streets.

• Skopje 2014 project: The square was substantially remodelled as part of the Skopje 2014 urban project and features many newly erected monuments and facades from that programme.
• Major monument: Dominated visually by a large equestrian monument commonly known as 'Warrior on a Horse' which stands prominently in the plaza and is a focal point for visitors.
