Ma Wan
Island Small Hong Kong island with residential area and park
A small island off Hong Kong’s northwest coast in Tsuen Wan District, Ma Wan mixes a fishing village, a waterfront park and views of the Tsing Ma Bridge. Visitors come for Ma Wan Park, short hikes and seaside snapshots.
Ma Wan is a small island in Hong Kong’s Tsuen Wan District located between Tsing Yi and Lantau Island. It combines public parkland, a themed attraction and a large residential development.
A secondary reason people visit is to view major engineering works from vantage points on the island - sections of the Tsing Ma Bridge and the Ma Wan Viaduct pass close by and are visible from park promenades. The residential community known as Park Island occupies much of the interior and provides the island’s services and marina.
Ma Wan was historically a fishing and farming community before major development in the late 20th and early 21st centuries. The island was substantially redeveloped with residential projects and public amenity spaces during that period.
Ma Wan sits in the western New Territories of Hong Kong between Tsing Yi and Lantau Island, within Tsuen Wan District, and is part of the Lantau Link corridor.
- Transport links: The island is crossed by the Ma Wan Viaduct and lies beneath parts of the Tsing Ma Bridge and Lantau Link, making it visible from key motorway routes to Lantau.
- Noah's Ark on Ma Wan: Contains the Noah's Ark attraction, a purpose-built, full-size Ark replica with exhibitions and visitor facilities that opened in the 2000s.
What to See #
- Noah's Ark (theme attraction): A family-oriented attraction centred on a full-size replica of Noah's Ark with exhibition spaces, a chapel, and educational displays about biodiversity and faith-based themes.
- Ma Wan Park and gardens: Public landscaped gardens, walking paths and outdoor play areas that form part of Ma Wan Park, intended for day visitors and families.
- Park Island residential area: A high-density residential development and community known as Park Island that occupies much of the island's interior, with pedestrian connections to the park areas.
Tips for Visiting Ma Wan #
- Go early in the evening for sunset views framed by Tsing Ma Bridge - the island's coastal paths and viewpoints are quieter then and popular photo spots aren't crowded.
- Access the island using the public bus routes or the pedestrian link from Tsuen Wan/park island connections rather than private vehicles; check local transit options (bus/ferry) for the most direct route from your part of Hong Kong.
- If you plan to visit the Noah's Ark attraction, buy tickets in advance - the attraction is ticketed and can sell out on holiday weekends, whereas the island's walking paths and viewpoints remain freely accessible.
