Lycosura

Lycosura is an ancient Arcadian settlement in the Peloponnese known from classical sources and archaeological remains. The site is particularly associated with a sanctuary complex dedicated to the goddess Despoina.

Visitors encounter foundations of religious buildings and fragmentary sculptures uncovered by archaeological work, including carved stone elements connected to the sanctuary. The remains are modest on the surface but important for understanding regional cult practice in the classical period.

Ancient author Pausanias described Lycosura in the 2nd century AD and noted its antiquity and its sculptural cult images; modern excavations have confirmed the presence of a dedicated sanctuary and related civic structures.

Lycosura lies in the mountainous interior of Arcadia in the Peloponnese, set on slopes that link it to nearby classical towns and rural uplands.
