The classical Lyceum in Athens is the gymnasium and philosophical school where Aristotle established the Peripatetic school around 334 BC. It became one of the principal centres of classical Greek philosophical teaching.
The site functioned as a combined gymnasium, lecture area and meeting place for philosophical inquiry; Aristotle and his followers conducted lectures and research there. The Lyceum played a central role in the development of Aristotelian philosophy and education in classical Athens.
Aristotle founded the school after returning to Athens and taught there until about 322 BC; the Lyceum continued to be a place associated with philosophical activity in later Hellenistic and Roman periods. The site preserves the association with the Peripatetic tradition.
The Lyceum is located in Athens, within the area of the ancient city where public gymnasia and sanctuaries sat; the archaeological site is accessible from the modern city centre.
