The Luxembourg Palace is a 17th-century palace on Paris’s Left Bank in the 6th arrondissement, originally commissioned by Marie de’ Medici. It now houses the French Senate and overlooks the public Jardin du Luxembourg.
Visitors come for the adjacent gardens, formal terraces, statues and the Medici Fountain; guided access to parts of the palace is available during specific public openings. The palace interiors contain legislative chambers and historic rooms used for parliamentary business.
Construction began in 1615 under Salomon de Brosse for Marie de’ Medici; the building has undergone alterations over the centuries and was adapted in the 19th century to accommodate the Senate. It has served various state functions since the early modern period.

How to Get to Luxembourg Palace #
The Luxembourg Palace (Palais du Luxembourg) is in Paris’s 6th arrondissement overlooking the Jardin du Luxembourg. The site is a short walk from central Paris; nearest rail/transit are RER B at “Luxembourg” (RER B) and several Métro stations nearby (for example Odéon). From other parts of Paris it is easily reached by RER/metro or by local bus, then a brief walk into the gardens and palace area.
Tips for Visiting Luxembourg Palace #
- Approach the site through the Luxembourg Gardens-enter via the main garden gates (for example rue de Médicis/rue de Vaugirard) to see the palace façade, pond and Medici Fountain in sequence.
- Bear in mind the building houses the French Senate and interior access is limited; if you want an inside visit, look for guided tours or the annual European Heritage Days (Journées du Patrimoine) when the palace sometimes opens to the public.
- For photos and a quieter visit, arrive early in the morning when the palace and central pond are less crowded and local groups have not yet arrived.
