The Jardin du Luxembourg is a large public garden in Paris’s 6th arrondissement created in the early 17th century for Marie de’ Medici. It combines formal parterres, tree-lined promenades, statues and recreational lawns around the Luxembourg Palace.

Prominent features include the palace (now the seat of the French Senate), the Medici Fountain and a central octagonal pond where model sailboats are commonly sailed. The garden offers ornamental flowerbeds, a rose garden, an orchard and children’s play areas.

The gardens were laid out in the early 1600s and have been reworked and expanded across centuries to their present form, serving both as a public amenity and a setting for cultural monuments. They sit in central Paris on the Left Bank close to Saint-Sulpice and the Latin Quarter.

Jardin du Luxembourg sits in Paris’s 6th arrondissement. The easiest rail access is RER B to Luxembourg station (a short walk into the gardens) or nearby Métro stops such as Odéon (lines 4 and 10) and Saint-Sulpice (line 4); the garden borders Boulevard Saint-Michel on its east side. If driving, it’s in central Paris (very short distances from other central arrondissements).

• Visit early on weekday mornings to enjoy the formal gardens and central pond before tourists and locals gather-mornings are quieter for photos and for finding an empty chair by the pond.
• Enter from the Rue de Médicis/Rue Guynemer side to reach the Medici Fountain quickly; many visitors stay around the central pond and miss the fountain, statuary and the calmer northern paths.
• If central lawns are busy, head toward the tree-lined promenades and the smaller groves on the garden's east side for quieter strolls and more sculpture sightings away from the busiest areas.
