Lut Desert
Nature Reserve Iranian desert with some of Earth's hottest surface temperatures
Iran’s Dasht-e Lut hosts vast salt plains, wind-sculpted yardangs and dark basalt surfaces; satellite data record extreme surface temperatures. Adventurers and photographers visit for dramatic geomorphology and desert expeditions under strict local conditions.
The Lut Desert (Dasht-e Lut) is a large arid region in southeastern Iran, primarily within Kerman province, notable for dramatic wind-carved landforms and extreme surface temperatures. It covers an expansive area of roughly 51,800 square kilometres and is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage natural site.
The Lut Desert is a natural feature shaped over millennia by wind erosion and occasional fluvial activity; there is no sustained ancient urban settlement across the central desert. Scientific interest has focused on its geomorphology and climate extremes. The area was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List as a natural site in recognition of its outstanding desert landforms.
The desert sits in southeastern Iran, principally within Kerman province. The nearest local settlements and access points are towns at the desert margins such as Shahdad; much of the interior is remote and sparsely visited.
- Extreme surface temperatures: Satellite measurements have recorded some of the highest land-surface temperatures on Earth here, making midday summer visits potentially hazardous.
- Access and logistics: Access is usually from the town of Shahdad on the desert's western edge; travel into the central desert requires a 4x4 and basic desert supplies.
What to See #
- Shahdad kaluts: Extensive fields of wind-sculpted yardangs and sand ridges near the town of Shahdad, where linear 'kalut' formations reach tens of metres in height and extend for several kilometres.
- Salt flats and Gandom Beryan: A broad salt and clay plain known locally as Gandom Beryan, noted for extremely high ground surface temperatures recorded by satellites.
How to Get to Lut Desert #
By road from Kerman province towns: the Lut Desert (Dasht-e Lut) is accessed by sealed and unsealed roads from towns such as Kerman or the desert-edge settlement of Shahdad. Visitors normally travel by road with a 4WD vehicle and/or join organized tours from Kerman or nearby towns; local routes into the interior require a high-clearance vehicle and guidance from experienced local drivers or tour operators.
Tips for Visiting Lut Desert #
- Plan visits in the cooler months (roughly October-April) and schedule photography outings for sunrise or sunset to get the best light on the yardangs and to avoid the extreme daytime temperatures recorded in the region.
- Go with a professional 4x4 operator based in Kerman/Shahdad - access to the Kaluts and safe routes across the Lut's terrain require experienced local drivers and up-to-date track knowledge.
- If you're photographing the landscape, include a night or late-evening session - the desert's remoteness offers exceptional dark-sky conditions that many day visitors miss.
Best Time to Visit Lut Desert #
Visit the Lut Desert in the cooler months (late autumn through winter) when daytime temperatures are far lower and travel is safer.
